MIDI Solutions Relay
The MIDI Solutions Relay
contains a relay that can be programmed to open or close in
response to MIDI events (for eight relays in a single rack space unit,
see the MIDI Solutions R8).
Event types are
programmable and include:
-
Note
The Relay can be programmed to respond to
Note messages of programmable Note number and MIDI channel (a single MIDI
channel or all 16 MIDI channels). The Relay will accept a combined total of
10 Note or Control Change settings.
The Relay can respond to Note messages in eight modes:
1. CLOSE for Note-ons, OPEN for Note-offs
2. OPEN for Note-ons, CLOSE for Note-offs
3. CLOSE for both Note-ons and Note-offs
4. OPEN for both Note-ons and Note-offs
5. Produce a CLOSED pulse on receipt of Note-on
6. Produce a CLOSED pulse on receipt of Note-off
7. Produce an OPEN pulse on receipt of Note-on
8. Produce an OPEN pulse on receipt of Note-off
Combining these modes allows the Relay to respond to different Note
messages in different ways. For example the Relay can be programmed to
close for some Notes and open for others, close when a Note is pressed and
open when it is released, and produce a pulse when another Note is
received. Pulse duration times are programmable from 8 - 1016 ms in 8 ms
increments, and from 1 - 127 s in 1 s increments.
In addition, a Link function allows the relay to be specified only to
open or close if all other settings are also in that state. For example,
the
relay could be programmed to close only if all of a group of Notes are on.
-
Control Change
The Relay can be programmed to
respond to Control Change messages of programmable Control Change number
and MIDI channel (a single MIDI channel or all 16 MIDI channels). The Relay
will accept a combined total of 10 Note or Control Change settings.
The Relay can respond to Control Change messages in eight modes:
1. CLOSE above threshold value, OPEN below threshold value
2. OPEN above threshold value, CLOSE below threshold value
3. CLOSE for all values
4. OPEN for all values
5. Produce a CLOSED pulse above threshold value
6. Produce a CLOSED pulse below threshold value
7. Produce an OPEN pulse above threshold value
8. Produce an OPEN pulse below threshold value
Combining these modes allows the Relay to respond to different Control
Change messages in different ways. For example the Relay can be programmed to
close for some Control Change messages and open for others, close when a
Control Change passes above a threshold and open when it falls below it,
and produce a pulse when another Control Change passes a threshold value.
Pulse duration times are programmable from 8 - 1016 ms in 8 ms increments,
and from 1 - 127 s in 1 s increments. Threshold values are programmable
from 0 - 127.
In addition, a Link function allows allows the relay to be specified only to
open or close if all other settings are also in that state.
For example, the relay could be programmed to close only if all of a group of
CC values are below their programmed thresholds.
-
Program Change
The Relay can be programmed to
respond to Program Change numbers 0 to 127, on any MIDI channel (a single
MIDI channel or all 16 MIDI channels). The Relay can be programmed to OPEN or
CLOSE on receiving each Program Change number.
Instead of latching open or closed, the Relay can be programmed to produce
an open or closed pulse when selected Program Change messages are received.
Pulse duration times are programmable from 8 - 1016 ms in 8 ms increments,
and from 1 - 127 s in 1 s increments.
-
System Exclusive
The Relay can be programmed to
CLOSE when a System Exclusive message is received, and/or OPEN when another
System Exclusive message is received.
Instead of latching open or closed, the Relay can be programmed to produce
an open or closed pulse when the System Exclusive messages are received.
Pulse duration times are programmable from 8 - 1016 ms in 8 ms increments,
and from 1 - 127 s in 1 s increments.
Since MIDI Machine Control messages are a type of System Exclusive message,
the Relay can be set up to respond to messages such as transport commands.
For example the Relaycould be programmed to open and close in response to
MIDI Machine Control Play and Stop messages.
The maximum length of each System Exclusive message is 20 bytes.
A fast reed relay is used
for a response time of less than 2 ms. Relay contacts are rated at 500 mA.
Contacts are made available via connection at the tip and sleeve of a 1/4"
mono phone jack. When switching inductive loads be aware of
precautions that must be
taken to avoid back EMF problems.
The Relay is programmed by
sending it MIDI System Exclusive messages (read the
Programming FAQs
for more details). This is easily done with the MIDI Solutions Programming Tools
software. Once programmed, its settings are retained even after power is removed. The Relay
can be reprogrammed with new settings as often as needed.
The Relay is MIDI-powered, and
requires no batteries or power supply to operate with most MIDI products (for more information read
the Power FAQs). A MIDI indicator LED lights up when the product is
powered and flashes when MIDI data passes through it.
